Tasty Fish Fry | Meen Varuval | Using Egg And Roasted Chana Dal Powder | Tamil Nadu Style

This is one of my most favorite fish fry that takes a little more effort than the ordinary one, but the effort is worth it. Here I have used roasted chana dal powder (pottu kadalai powder) and beaten egg that makes the fish fry taste excellent and coats the fish really well with the masala. You can use any kind of fish for this recipe, but Seer fish (Vanjaram) and Baracuda (Seela meen) will suit even better. I got this recipe from a Tv show and am glad I jotted it down and tried it too. The flavors are awesome here, adding curry leaves makes the fish fry smell even more South Indian. Fish fries are one of the favorite dishes for Sea-food lovers and is also a comfort recipe. It has been found out by researchers that daily intake of fishes reduces diseases and disorders. Also it is rich in protein, low in fat and a good source of omega 3 fatty acids. Obviously it is also easy to prepare and there are also a variety of fish fry recipes available. This recipe is super yummy and goes great as sides/starter. Try it out and you'll love it for sure. INGREDIENTS
  1. Fish slices - 2
  2. Red chilli powder - 1 spoon
  3. Pepper powder - 1/4 spoon
  4. Roasted chana dhal powder/Pottu kadalai powder - 1 spoon
  5. Lemon juice - Few drops (optional)
  6. Beaten Egg - 2 spoons
  7. Ginger-Garlic paste - 1/4 spoon
  8. Curry leaves - From a sprig
  9. Salt - As required
  10. Any edible cooking oil -  For shallow frying

PREPARATION METHOD
  • Wash the fish slices well.
  • Make a paste using the following;
    • Red chilli powder + Pepper powder + Ginger-Garlic paste + Salt + Lemon juice + Beaten egg + Curry leaves + Pottu kadalai powder/Roasted chana dhal powder.

  • Apply this paste (Marinate) on the fish slices and make sure that the fish is fully covered by the masala paste.
  • Keep this aside for atleast 15 minutes
  • Pour oil in a fry pan and after the oil heats up, deep fry the fish pieces.
  • Roast (shallow fry) till it turns reddish brown and then serve!!!

TIP 1: After marinating the fish slices place it in the refrigerator (not freezer) for 10 minutes and then fry the pieces. The fish slices will absorb the masala  (marinade) quickly and well when placed in the refrigerator.

TIP 2: Do not fry on high flame as the masala will get burnt easily. So shallow fry on medium flame.

This mouth watering fish fry serves as a good tasty side-dish /starter!!
