Bread Cigars | Crispy Bread Fingers | Leftover Bread Recipe | Snacks Using Leftover Bread

I always have the proclivity to try out new and different snack recipes with fresh bread or leftover; and to my surprise all my trials have turned out good; now, thats not kinda boasting, but its a good feeling when the works of your hands turn out fruitful right? Using leftovers, I mean the fresh one not the rotten kind, makes me feel content, being frugal at times helps you reduce wastage and also satisfy hungry tummies. Whenever I find leftover bread that too fresh ones, discarding them right away feels like pain to me and so I end up using them in some way. Recently I tried this bread cigar recipe with few fresh leftover bread slices and some Indian spice powders and they turned out to be appetizing. They were tasty, had a slight crispy texture on the outside with delightful Indian flavors and mellow sweetness. You will need just a few minutes to prepare these and so this can be an instant treat for your kids and guests; Try this easy-peasy recipe and enjoy with ketchup and a hot cup of tea!

Check out some of my other recipes using leftover bread which have been a hit here in my blog;

INGREDIENTS

Makes 10 to 12 depending on the size and length of the cigars
Total Preparation Time - 10 to 20 minutes
  1. Bread slices - 5 (I used sweet white bread, you can use any bread you want; sweet bread will taste better)
  2. Corn flour - 3 teaspoons
  3. Chopped coriander leaves - 1 tablespoon
  4. Red chilli powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  5. Cumin powder - 1/4 teaspoon
  6. Chaat masala - 2 pinches (optional)
  7. Salt - 1/4 teaspoon (adjust as per taste)
  8. Oil - For deep frying

PREPARATION METHOD

  • Tear bread slices and sprinkle some water and knead well.
  • Add corn flour, red chilli powder, cumin powder, chaat masala, salt, coriander leaves and knead until it seems like smooth yet stiff dough (similar to chapati dough texture). Now check for salt and add if needed.
  • Set aside for 10 to 15 minutes so that the dough absorbs the flavors well. No harm in proceeding immediately, if you don't have enough time.
  • Pinch out small equal portions from the dough and roll them between your palms to form finger long cylindrical shapes. Cut the ends with a knife to give a clean look if you want.
  • Now place a frying pan on flame and pour enough oil to deep fry the prepared cigars. When the oil turns hot gently slide in the prepared cigars.
  • Fry on a medium flame until they turn brown in color.
  • Remove from oil using a slotted spoon and place on a tissue paper to remove excess oil.
  • Serve hot with ketchup.

TIP 1: Sweet bread tastes better, but still you can use any kind of your choice. Be careful while adding salt, as bread already has salt in it.

TIP 2: You can make balls or any shapes of your choice. Just make sure that you do not add too much of water while preparing dough. The dough should be hard yet smooth without bread pieces only then you will get perfect cigars. If you add too much of water you won't be able to make shapes, they will break while frying and also dunk in a lot of oil.
